KUCHING: An assortment of colourful traditional attires of the Ibans were showcased during Sarawak Dayak Iban Association (Sadia) Kuching Branch’s Ngajat competition at the Christian Ecumenical Centre in Jalan Stampin here on Saturday evening.
Seven models from Oniey Ibaniez Custom were given the honour to display on stage various types of traditional Iban women attires while three male and six female Ngajat dancers completed the show.
According to Sadia Kuching branch chairman Dato Paduka Anthony Nait Mani, they would work closely with others and the government to promote and preserve Iban culture and tradition so that they would not disappear in the face of modernisation.
“It is important that Iban parents teach their cultures and traditions to their children because they are part of their identities. All must treat them as heritage to be protected at all cost from destructive and negative elements,” he said.
Nait also wanted Dayak-based NGOs to promote and preserve the Iban art of speaking in idioms (Jako Silop) as they would make public speeches more beautiful and interesting.
“Jako Silop very often would and could catch the attention of the audience but those who are not expert in it should not be disheartened because effective public speeches still lie in the messages that the speaker wants to relay.”
Various types of Ngajat stance were showcased to the delight of the diners. They were Ajat Kumang Menua, Ajat Kumang Antu Pala, Ajat Kumang Beradu, Ajat Bujang Berani and Ajat Nyambut Temuai.
In the women’s Category of the Ngajat competition, Bronica Sayeng of Kuching emerged champion and walked away with a cash prize of RM700, certificate and a hamper while second and third spots went to Kate Tingang Dato of Kuching (RM500) and Josephine Forman of Kampung Ensebang in Serian (RM300) respectively.
In the men’s category of the competition, Morris Ucham of Marop Atas Engkilili was the champion, taking home RM700, certificate and a hamper, while second and third spots went to Aaron Atkinson Albert of Kuching (RM500) and Anderson Rambo Siong of Kuching (RM300) respectively.
