KUCHING: Representatives from the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Damai recently met with Datuk Ir Lo Khere Chiang to personally express their heartfelt gratitude for his ongoing support towards JCI Damai’s mission and activities throughout 2024.

His steadfast encouragement has been instrumental in empowering the organisation to pursue its initiatives aimed at youth development and community impact in Sarawak.

KUCHING (Oct 22): Batu Kitang assemblyman Dato Lo Khere Chiang underscored the importance of drug prevention and emphasised how it is a collective responsibility.

He acknowledged the need for ongoing collaboration between government agencies, non-government organisations (NGOs) and the public in addressing drug-related issues.

“Drug addiction is a challenge that touches every corner of our society, threatening not only individuals but entire families and communities. Prevention is better than cure and education is our most powerful weapon in this fight,” he said when speaking at the Anti Drug Digital Infohunt programme in Kampung Semeba on Oct 19, according to a recent statement.

The programme, which was a joint collaboration between the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) Kuching and Kuching Anti-Drugs Squad, served as an innovative platform engaging participants in learning about drug prevention through interactive digital activities.

Lo also commended the programme as a creative approach in spreading awareness, noting it extended the message beyond the attendees and reaching online communities as well.

With 40 youths participating from Kampung Semeba, Kampung Sudat, Kampung Tematu and Kampung Bumbok, the programme highlighted the importance of using digital tools in raising awareness about the dangers of drug addiction.

Lo also encouraged the public to support to fight against drug abuse by volunteering with the movement. Those interested can register as anti-drug volunteers through the Antidrugs SKUAD website.

Also present were AADK Sarawak assistant director of treatment and rehabilitation Ahmad Fikri Arif Muhamad Fuat, Malaysia Drugs Prevention Association (Pemadam) Kuching branch chairman Sofhi Jebal, Padawan Subdistrict Office representative Paul Mathieus Akin and Kampung Semeba Ketua Kaum Thomas Gown.

Premier praises Lo for setting inspiring example for pausing speech during Azan

KUCHING, Oct 6: Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang has set a good and inspiring example by pausing his speech when the call to prayer (Azan) was sounded during the launching of a new community hall for Kampung Haji Baki here today.

Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, who officiated at the ceremony, took the opportunity to praise Lo for his exemplary behaviour which exhibited Sarawak’s values in acceptance, respect and unity.

“I am not praising him for no reason. For a Chinese to stop midway in his speech when the Azan was sounded shows that he respects the Muslims, if not he would have gone ahead with his speech.

“He (Lo) is also a caring leader who has fought for the needs of the people (especially in his constituency) irrespective of race, religion and background. That’s why you have a new community hall today,” he said.

Such leadership, Abang Johari continued, is also in line with the Sarawak government’s policy of inclusivity towards 2030 and allowed projects like community halls to be implemented.

“This is the way of life in Sarawak; we do not see the backgrounds of people but try to fulfill the needs of the people.

“Likewise, myself, Prof Sim (Batu Kawah rep Dr Sim Kian Hui), Wilfred (Kota Sentosa rep Wilfred Yap) and others take into account the needs of all races,” he added.

Abang Johari has also approved RM1.8 million for a community centre extension to the newly launched community hall for Kampung Haji Baki as requested by Lo, who is also Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman, so that the residents and surrounding community can gather for activities.

To that, Abang Johari said it is fortunate that the Sarawak government can approve projects for the people as the State’s revenue has doubled to RM10 billion due to good and prudent financial management without unnecessary spending.

“This is largely contributed by the implementation of Sales Tax (for petroleum products) which was a hard-won achievement after facing Petronas (Petroliam Nasional Berhad) in court,” he said.

Kita Festival

Construction of water reservoir begins early 2025

Construction of water reservoir begins early 2025

Lo (2nd left) speaks to the leader during the dialogue sessions.

KUCHING: The construction of the much-anticipated water reservoir in Kampung Bunga Rampai is projected to commence in early 2025.

Batu Kitang assemblyman Datuk Ir Lo Khere Chiang stated that this project will provide vital support to the residents of Kampung Bunga Rampai in tackling the persistent water supply issues that have affected the community for two consecutive years.

The project, said Lo, costing over RM53 million and scheduled to take two years to complete (early 2027) will provide water supply to not only 600 residents in the said area, but also residents in Bau and Sematan.

“Kampung Bunga Rampai is one of the strongest areas under my constituency and for the past two years, residents in the area are not very happy because of this water shortage problem.

“The reservoir project is for the long term, and for the short term, Kuching Water Board (KWB) will increase the water pressure of the pipelines for the area, so that the residents will be provided with water supply,” he said.

He said this at a press conference after attending the dialogue session with the leaders under the Batu Kitang constituency at Batu Kitang Service Centre here on Friday.

Moreover, Lo said that KWB will continue to improve its service, especially when it comes to addressing the complaints by members of the public.

“KWB also assured us that they will make sure contractors would do a great job when it comes to handling the project.

“My suggestion towards KWB is that if the contractors do not do their job very well, terminate their contract and give them to the next one,” he added.

In the meantime, KWB deputy general manager Ismail Ali said the project will be constructed at an elevation of 68 metres above sea level, utilising gravity for water distribution.

He stated that for water booster station in Mile 10 Kota Padawan, an upgrading project is currently in the works with 40 per cent completed and expected to be fully completed by December 19 next year.

“”The upgrade project, with a budget of RM10 million, will increase the water capacity from three million litres to eight million litres for Landeh, with an additional eight million litres allocated for the Puncak Borneo area,” he stated.

Also present during the dialogue session were KWB board member Amy Tnay Li Ping and other distinguished guests.
