Sarawak will not allow extremists to interfere in its affairs

Sarawak will not allow extremists to interfere in its affairs

SIBURAN: Sarawak will never allow racist extremists to interfere with the racial unity and harmony here.

Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang said that Sarawak has been living in peace and harmony for a long time, and it could not afford to let Malayan-based parties break the people apart.

“Sarawak must remember to work together as one, and only the multiracial leaders in Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) can preserve that sentiment, ” he said during the GPS Flag Rally at the Siburan Hall yesterday.

He added that Sarawak must also look after its resources especially oil and gas. “What good will Pakatan Harapan (PH) government do? All they care about is to take as much as they can.

They take our oil, and in return what do we get? Nothing, and only 5 percent oil royalty, ” said Lo.

Furthermore, he said the RM250 million drainage projects in Kuching have been cancelled and the allocation from the federal government to trim the grasses had also been cancelled.

“PH has promised that prices of goods will decrease. But what you get now is everything has increased.

Is this the kind of leadership you want to support? “Only GPS can represent Sarawak, they understand the wants and needs of the people.

No other party, especially Malayan-based parties, will ght for Sarawak. “So, please support our Chief Minister in his fight to reclaim more of Sarawak’s rights and to make Sarawak a rich income state, ” said Lo.

Meanwhile, Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Youth chief Gerald Rentap Jabu said Malayan-based parties perceived themselves as smart and capable of looking after Sarawak and understood the feelings o Sarawakians, but that was not the case.

“Only GPS is able to take care of its people, and will continue to ght and protect Sarawak’s rights for the betterment of our future generation.”

The seventh day of the rally began in Siburan, then headed to Bau and Lundu.

Today will be the last day of the rally which will be held at Sadong Jaya and Kota Samarahan.

Dispute over retaining wall outside MPP’s jurisdiction — Lo

Dispute over retaining wall outside MPP’s jurisdiction — Lo

Lo was responding to the statements of Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Chong Chieng Jen’s special assistant Christina Chiew and former Stampin MP Julian Tan Kok Ping which accused him of not assisting a house owner at Jalan Sungai Moyan, Batu Kawa here to resolve his complaint against a developer who built a retention wall behind his house.
Yesterday, the house owner, Willie Kho,  sought help from Democratic Action Party (DAP) to settle his dispute with the developer who is the owner of the land behind his house.
The retaining wall made of oil drums spans over 134m in length and reaches the height of 12 feet (3.8m) from the ground level where Kho’s house is sited on.
“Every time it rains, soil gets washed down and flows together with rainwater to my house. The construction of the retaining wall was substandard,” said Kho, adding that the situation also caused drain blockage at the area.
“The area gets flooded every time it rains heavily.”
Making the matter worse, Kho learned that the contractor had planned to add another layer of oil drums on top of the present retaining wall, increasing the height by another three feet (1m).
“This is very worrying. I might be forced to relocate my family soon should the situation become too dangerous.”
“There are no buildings located on top on the land. The landowner only did earth-filling,” said Lo.
Lo also pointed out that the retaining wall is located  within the land belonging to the developer and that he is earth-filling his own land.
The MPP chairman added he had advised Kho to seek legal advice as the landowner did not submit any development plans on the land to the Land and Survey Department before he built the retention wall and earth filling.
“I strongly advised the complainant to take legal action against the landowner. I think this is the best option for the complainant,” said Lo when contacted yesterday.
Lo also told the house owner to lodge complaints against the landowner to the Land and Survey Department and the state Ministry of Urban Development and Natural Resources.
Earlier, Chiew told the press after visiting Kho’s house that  the MPP chairman should deal with complaints lodged by the people in areas under the council’s jurisdiction, instead of asking them to seek solutions themselves.
Kho said he first approached Lo for help in July last year and since  he did not get any assistance from MPP, he decided to turn to DAP.
Chiew said Lo should have provided a proper explanation to the complainant as the area is under MPP’s jurisdiction.
“Who should be responsible should anyone suffer injuries, or should there be deaths due to the substandard construction of the retaining wall. What if the retaining wall, made from oil drums, collapsed and buried the complainant’s house?” she questioned.
Former Stampin MP Julian Tan, who was with Chiew during the inspection, said it was unacceptable for Lo to shift the responsibility of solving the issue to the house owner.
“This issue should have been solved immediately without further delay, as it poses grave danger to the complainant and his family,” said Tan

KUCHING: The presentation was held in conjunction with the launching of EFS which was officiated by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
The chief minister said the EFS is a new social approach starting this year to help Sarawakians.
“Today is a very meaningful day for us Sarawakians because for the first time, the state government under Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is giving the endowment fund of RM1,000 each for babies born this year,” Abang Johari said.
He pointed out that the state government is allocating RM40 million this year for EFS, adding that the amount was based on the average birth rate statistics in the state.
The fund will be invested by the government and the amount can only be withdrawn on their 18th birthday for their education or as investment capital to start a business.

He added that he has helped at least two families whose children performed academically well but could not afford to to enter universities.

KUCHING: An assemblyman from the Sarawak United People’s Party has urged the Pakatan Harapan government to disburse the funds promised by the former Barisan Nasional administration for the repair of dilapidated schools in the state.
Batu Kitang rep Lo Khere Chiang said the government had a duty to maintain such schools as the safety of teachers and students should be of utmost importance.
“If we can afford a third national car project, surely we can ensure that our children enjoy a safe and conducive learning environment in all our schools,” he told FMT.
He also called on Education Minister Maszlee Malik to stop “pointing fingers” in the matter as all government schools in Sarawak are under the purview of the federal government.
“Funds must be swiftly and effectively channelled to rebuild all dilapidated schools across the nation, especially in Sabah and Sarawak,” he said.
He warned that inconsistent funding would inconvenience school authorities and impede their administration.
Lo Khere Chiang

“Give our children the tools, the amenities, the teachers and the resources they need to succeed in life,” he said, adding that dilapidated schools were one of the contributing factors to the school dropout rate in Sarawak.

He said the dropout rate was especially high in rural areas, and that other factors including poverty could not be ruled out.
Lo, who is also chairman of the Padawan municipal council, claimed the education system in Sabah and Sarawak had been tainted by the centralisation of power and politics.
He added however that such situations could also be seen in other places around the world.
“A change of government usually means a change of educational policies,” he said. “Sometimes it is for the better, and sometimes it is for the worse.”
In Malaysia, he said, the education system had suffered from constant changes to suit the political and social scenario.
“Even the teachers are unable to get accustomed to the present system,” he added.
He referred to Finland, which he said had the best education system in the world.
Adding that it took Finland about 40 years to get its education system on the right track, he compared this to the situation in Malaysia.
“What have we done in Malaysia in the last 40 years?
“We have gone from having a very good public education system where the average student had a more-than-confident grasp of the English language to one in which graduates from local universities are conversant in only the Malay language.
“Do not get me wrong on this. I am insistent that all Malaysians ought to be conversant in Malay, but is it too much to ask of them to include a second or third language as an important part of the curriculum?”
