‘Standalone’ utility pole in Lrg Batu Kawa barricaded, to be shifted today
KUCHING (Sept 22): The relocation of an electricity pole at a junction leading to the Lorong Batu Kawa 3 housing area will take place today, said Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang.
He said this when contacted yesterday over a viral image of the pole in the middle of the road, following the completion of works to widen the said road.
“Today (Sept 21), the area has been barricaded for safety reasons. It is clear that the lamp post was not shifted after the completion of the construction to widen the junction that leads into the housing area,” he said.
Lo said the matter was due to “miscommunication” between the contractors, and that Sesco has been directed to shift the pole.
The photo showing the pole which was uploaded on a local portal on Tuesday drew over 1,000 comments from netizens.
Many had ridiculed the situation while others highlighted the danger it posed to motorists especially at night.19 September 2022

Sarawak-China trade volume rises to RM27.05 bln last year, says Premier
KUCHING (Sept 19): The trade volume between Sarawak and China has risen to RM27.05 billion last year, said Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Abang Johari, who cited the International Trade, Industry and Investment Ministry’s statistics, also disclosed that the export volume from Sarawak to China was RM18.633 billion last year.
“That figure is for our export volume, which is mainly based on Sarawak’s commodities including LNG (liquefied natural gas) oil minerals.
“As for our import volume, not a lot, only RM8.4 billion… probably because China has a big population, meaning we have a big export to China while Sarawak has a small population, so we have small imports (from China),” he added.
Abang Johari said this in his speech during the Kuching China Trades Importers and Exporters Association’s (KCTIEA) 48th anniversary dinner at a local restaurant here last night. The dinner was also held to commemorate the 48th anniversary of Malaysia-China diplomatic relations and to celebrate the mid-autumn festival.
The Premier said the bilateral trade between China and Malaysia has contributed significantly to the Malaysia’s economic growth, of which Sarawak also accounted for a sizeable proportion.
This is evident when many infrastructure projects in Sarawak, including the Batang Lupar bridge project, were undertaken together with Chinese companies from China, he added.
“Because we aim to become a developed state by 2030, I sincerely hope that the growth of bilateral trade between our country and China will continue to grow and become one of the main driving forces for Sarawak,” he said.
Abang Johari, in his speech, also hoped that Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing who is the Prime Minister’s Special Envoy to China will continue to promote Sarawak to China.
Among those present during the event were Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching His Excellency Xing Weiping, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian’s representative and also Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang, Tiong, KCTIEA president Datuk Yii Ming Tang, and the event’s organising chairman Dato Sim Kiang Chiok.11 September 2022

Bau Tasik Biru Festival goes large-scale
BAU (Sept 9): Bau Tasik Biru Festival to be held from Sept 22 to Oct 2 anticipates a larger audience this year round, said Tasik Biru assemblyman Datuk Harry Henry Jinep.
“This year’s festival is different from the previous one because it will not only involve Bau town area itself, but will also include other areas in Bau district such as Siniawan and Paku,” he said during a press conference here yesterday.
“We are expecting 60,000 visitors to partake in the festival and we want to make it an event that will boost local tourism and generate income for the people of Bau,” he added.
The Sarawak Deputy Minister of Transport said the festival this year focuses on its sustainability aspect, where the main organising committee had agreed to establish partnerships and collaborations with other organisers to promote tourism events for Bau district, effective 2022 to 2024.
Among the events which visitors can anticipate during the festival this year is the launching of the Tasik Biru Suspension Bridge, cultural shows, various performances, contests and competitions, sales of products and exhibitions by various agencies.
As we will celebrate this festival for 11 days and with many events being held throughout the festival, we hope to see everyone’s participation in making the festival a successful and lively one, he said.
Bau Tasik Biru Festival was first held in 1951, and is traditionally held at the surrounding areas of Tasik Biru, a man-made lake of gold mining origin located within Bau town.
The last time Tasik Biru Festival was held was in 2019 before the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The festival also aims to strengthen unity in Bau’s multiracial community while showcasing the local cuisines, cultural performances, watersport event known locally as “Jong”, handicraft and exhibitions as well as promoting Bau town as one of the state’s tourist destinations.
Also present during the press conference held at Bau Tasik Biru Food Village were Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang, Bau district officer Anielia Siam and Bau District Council secretary Ng Siang Wei.

Bt Kitang rep: Sarawak will grow rich, but it takes time to get there
KUCHING (Sept 4): Sarawak would emerge a rich and developed state in the next 10 years under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, said Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang.
He said Abang Johari had come up with major development plans to ensure that Sarawak would generate more revenues in years to come.
“Sarawak will grow rich, but we are not ‘Harry Potter’ or magicians. It takes time to plan and get our plans moving.
“I can tell that a lot of changes will take place in Sarawak in 10 years’ time. Under the able leadership of our Premier, Sarawak will become a developed state with lots of developments,” he said in his speech prior to presenting certificates to the participants of Kolej Komuniti Mas Gading’s food handling course yesterday.
Lo, also the chairman of Padawan Municipal Council, said Sarawak had been attracting quite a number of foreign investments, which would push the development of the state to greater heights.
Meanwhile on the course, he said it was imperative for food operators to acquire knowledge and skills in food handling.
On a separate subject, Lo thanked all those who had voted for him in the last state election.
He said without strong support, he would not be able to record a majority of over 4,000 votes.
“I could tell that I had the support from those in the ‘kampung’ (villages) as well as those in the urban areas because Batu Kitang comprises both the urban and rural areas.”
Lo said the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) had successfully retained Batu Kitang and Batu Kawah state constituencies, as well as wrested Kota Sentosa from the opposition, in the last state polls.
“(Deputy Premier, SUPP president and Batu Kawah assemblyman) Dr Sim Kui Hian has worked very hard. I work hard, but he works even harder, at a higher stress level.
“(Kota Sentosa assemblyman) Wilfred Yap, too, has worked hard. If he did not work hard, he would not get elected,” Lo pointed out.03 September 2022

JCI Padawan reaches out to old folks at RSK Kuching
KUCHING (Sept 3): The Padawan Chapter of Junior Chamber International (JCI) recently held a community outreach programme at Rumah Seri Kenangan (RSK) Kuching, in connection with this year’s National Day celebration.
Led by JCI Padawan vice-president (community) Hon Kah Fui, the programme meant to bring cheer to more than 60 residents of the old folks’ home at Jalan Kuching-Serian near here.
Among the activities held were a work party conducted by JCI Padawan members to clean up and decorate the new dining hall at RSK Kuching, presentation of donated essential items to the centre, as well as a birthday celebration for the residents who were born in the months of July, August, and September.
Earlier, RSK Kuching principal Sharifah Ranimah Wan Hashim and her team held a simple welcoming ceremony for the visitors, who also included the guest-of-honour Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang, who is also Padawan Municipal Council chairman.
In a statement, Hon said the residents of RSK Kuching were under the care of over 30 staff members.
He said the old folks’ home meant to accommodate those who had no family or next-of-kin, no children, and those who never married.
“It is a meaningful responsibility to care for our senior citizens, who have walked long before us, made life possible and provided us with so much guidance and wisdom.
“One of the residents whom I spoke with, said despite all the help, support and facilities provided by RSK Kuching, at times they would still feel miserable and distressed,” he said.
Hon also took the opportunity to thank the sponsors, comprising members of JCI Padawan and also the public.“We managed to raise around RM5,000 for this programme,” he added.
JCI Padawan is a platform for young citizens aged between 18 and 40 to develop their networking, leadership, entrepreneurship, management skills, and also personal development.
