Hadi Awang should apologise to Sarawakians for blatant comment on ‘roots of corruption’, says Lo

Hadi Awang should apologise to Sarawakians for blatant comment on ‘roots of corruption’, says Lo

Lo Khere Chiang

KUCHING, Aug 24: Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang wants PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang to apologise to Sarawakians for the latter’s claims that non-Muslims and non-Bumiputeras are the “roots of corruption” in Malaysia.

Describing Hadi Awang’s statement earlier as “irresponsible and blatant”, Lo said the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) which is now part and parcel of the Federal Constitution, upholds freedom of religion in Sarawak and Sabah.

Lo also suggested that Hadi Awang learn from the Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on how to be a good leader.

“Our Sarawak Premier understands and respects all religions and races in the State. In fact all our previous State leaders emphasised respect for all races and religion in Sarawak.

“Hadi should indeed take a leaf out of Abang Jo’s book to learn how to be a good leader where the latter ensures that no one race should suffer under his leadership.

“This is why Sarawak is growing well and prosperous under our Premier,” said Lo in a statement today.

Echoing Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) vice-president Datuk Liwan Lagang’s statement yesterday (Aug 23) on the same issue, Lo said Hadi Awang, who is also Marang MP, should focus more on developing his own and his party’s constituencies.

Liwan had reminded Hadi Awang that PAS-led Kelantan remains one of the poorest states in the country.

“Hadi would do well to take a good look at his own state and see how he could help the people there who are suffering in poverty.

“He should spend time working to upgrade the lives of his people instead of wasting it to spew nonsense and create disharmony among different races,” said Lo. — DayakDaily

KUCHING, Aug 19: The Sarawak government has approved a 20-acre site near Semenggoh Wildlife Centre at Batu 12 Jalan Kuching-Serian here for the development of a new Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) complex.

Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian said the RM60 million proposed new MPP complex funded by the government is a gift to the staff of MPP for their hard work.

“It is very challenging for MPP to do such a good job given the size of the areas it has to serve that covers both urban and semi-urban areas, as well as meeting the demands of an ageing population, urbanisation, demographic change and population growth.

“I hope with the new building that will provide a better working environment, MPP staff will be motivated and work harder to deliver better services to communities and serve the people better,” he said when addressing the MPP 26th anniversary celebration dinner at a hotel here tonight.

Dr Sim, who is also Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, emphasised that there was much more that needed to be done by local authorities including MPP in building a more sustainable city and future for Sarawak.

“As we move forward, we need sustainable development and environment and that’s why (achieving) the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) becomes increasingly important, more so given the threats of global climate change.

“We need to build smart cities, digitalisation, smart traffic lights, smart garbage collection and more smart infrastructures. We need to work closely and keep up with the changes of times, otherwise we will be left behind,” he said.

Dr Sim also commended MPP for their tremendous efforts and exhibiting high level of resilience in the face of Covid-19, recovery from the pandemic and revival of the economy.

“The spirit of unity shown in times of crisis as we coped and endured the past two years of hardships brought by Covid-19 gives me the confidence of the future of Sarawak and that we will able to develop Sarawak to become the richest with high GDP (gross domestic product), prosperous and strong by 2030 through the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PDCS).

“To share this prosperity, that’s why the Sarawak government is embarking on setting up the sovereign wealth fund,” he added.

Earlier on, MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang admitted that there were a lot challenges and work constraints faced from various communities within the jurisdiction, especially on delivering good and quality services from time to time.

“Some of these experiences are interesting and some are very challenging that I have been going through.

“But I must thank my Minister (Dr Sim) for his commitment and advice to make the key decision for my council to bring benefit to the people of this area and enable me to address the need of our diverse and multicultural community,” he said.

Having served as MPP chairman for almost 12 years, Lo added that it is his dream and aspiration together with the workforce of MPP to improve the council’s service delivery on its core activities.

He also intends to continue efforts to engage with residents, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), community associations and community leaders to bring improvement and make MPP area clean, green and better place to live in.

Deputy Minister for Public Health and Housing Datu Penguang Manggil, Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap, MPP deputy chairman Senator Dato Ahmad Ibrahim, and Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) chairman Dato Peter Minos were among those present. — DayakDaily

Poll: Not necessary for Sarawakians to celebrate National Day

KUCHING (Aug 13): A number of Sarawakians here feel that there is no need to celebrate National Day on Aug 31 as the event is meant to commemorate the declaration of ‘Merdeka’ (Independence) of Malaya, and has nothing to do with Sarawak.

Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) assistant publicity and information secretary Lo Khere Chiang said he respected the gazetted dates to commemorate Sarawak’s independence and the formation of Malaysia, and found no reason to celebrate National Day.

Malaysia was formed on Sept 16, 1963, while Sarawak achieved self-governance on July 22, 1963.

Lo Khere Chiang

“We recognise the formation of Malaysia. I don’t see why we should celebrate ‘Merdeka Day’. Malaya has taken all my oil (and gas resources) and has not treated me fairly,” he said when contacted yesterday.

“I would celebrate the independence day of Sarawak, and we celebrated it grandly in Sibu this year, and I support it.”

For Sarawak People’s Aspiration Party (Aspirasi) president Lina Soo, Aug 31, 1957 was the date Malaya was granted independence from Britain, opining that it had nothing to do with Sarawak.

“Sarawak was under the British colony until Sept 16, 1963. So no, there is no need for Sarawak to celebrate Malaya Independence Day,” she said.

Meanwhile, social activist Voon Shiak Ni called upon the Sarawak government to look into scrapping Aug 31 as a celebration in Sarawak.

“Historically, Aug 31 had no significance to Sarawak’s independence, and it’s better to be crystal clear about that; better for the understanding and appreciation of the history of Sarawak by all Sarawakians.

“We have been confused for more than 60 years and we need to move forward for all Sarawakians to take pride in the history of their own state and also the leaders of the state who fought and sacrificed for the independence of the state,” she said when contacted.

Moreover, Voon said for Sarawak, all the ‘Bulan Kemerdekaan’ (Independence Month) activities being carried throughout August should be conducted in July instead.

“This is so that the younger generation can learn more about patriotism and celebrate Sarawak Independence Day,” she said.

The Sarawak Independence Day was gazetted as a state public holiday by then-chief minister, the late Pehin Sri Datuk Patinggi Adenan Satem in 2016.

MPP declares war on rats, seeks to achieve Zero Rat Index

MPP declares war on rats, seeks to achieve Zero Rat Index

Lo (centre) shares on the dangers of leptospirosis with a seller at the Kota Padawan Public Market.

KUCHING (Aug 1): The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has launched its Public Market Gotong-royong Programme to achieve a Zero Rat Index.

In a statement today, MPP said the programme emphasises on the importance of rat control with activities such as studying the rat index through the installation of traps, the installation of ‘Matikus’ poison, identifying rat routes, awareness campaigns, and the distribution of leaflets.

“The purpose of this kind of campaign is to ensure that hawkers always maintain cleanliness at the point of sale in order to prevent the breeding of rats and subsequently prevent diseases such as leptospirosis,” said the statement issued in connection with the programme’s launching at Kota Padawan Public Market by MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang today.

MPP said campaign fully utilises the allocation from the Ministry of Housing and Local Government Malaysia.

“Prior to the launch of this campaign, Kota Padawan Public Market recorded a Level 1 Rat Index rate, which is a low level, but control and monitoring actions need to be carried out continuously to avoid the presence of rats in the future,” said the council.

The Rat Index rate scale goes from Level 0a to 0b, 1, 2, and 3.

MPP said sellers and the public are encouraged to participate in the rat control campaign by always maintaining cleanliness in their places of trade as well as homes to avoid rat-borne diseases which could lead to loss of life if treated late.
