KUCHING: There are many extreme and challenging events that can
be organised in Borneo to transform the island into a sport tourism
destination, says Tourism Ministry permanent secretary Ik Paon Joyik.
Tourism Ministry wants to make Borneo Island a popular venue for adventure and extreme sports.
He said organising such events could bring the people together and create economic activities for the locals.
“Let
us make Borneo Island a popular venue for adventure and extreme
sports,” he said at a press conference in conjunction with the launch of
the Padawan International 4X4 Off-Roaders Extreme Challenge 2015 here
today.
On the upcoming 4X4 challenge, Pahon said it would bring
the people together to spur domestic tourism which would provide a
spin-off effect to the service and local industry.
Meanwhile,
Padawan Municipal Council (PMC) chairman Lo Khere Chiang said a
preliminary survey indicated the event would generate total economic
activity to the tune of approximately RM3 million, with the average
spending of a domestic and foreign visitor at approximately RM375.
“This
is part of the spill-over effect from the event in generating tourism
ringgit with many racing fans and supporters who come to Sarawak for the
sole purpose of watching the race and most likely, extending their stay
to visit other fascinating attractions that Padawan has to offer,” he
said.
Lo said the council would need more than RM300,000 to organise the Padawan International 4X4 Off-Roaders Extreme Challenge 2015
