Lo Khere Chiang for Stampin?

Friday, 23 December 2011 11:38 | Written by Abang Salfian

KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (PMC) Chairman Lo Khere Chiang said he would consider himself performing a duty for his party Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) and the people if he is chosen to replace Stampin incumbent Datuk Yong Khoon Seng in the forthcoming parliamentary election.

“It is an old story (of him replacing Yong)...but if such an instruction to replace Yong comes from SUPP and State Barisan Nasional (BN) leaderships, then I consider it as performing a duty to my party and the people in Stampin constituency,” he said.

Lo seemed reluctant to make the comment when asked by New Sarawak Tribune about the rumours that he would be replacing Yong, who had stressed he would not be seeking re-election, during a press conference at his office yesterday.

“I am not the ‘best’ candidate,” he humbly admitted, “There are much better candidates for the replacement.

However, if instructed by my leaders, then I will give my best shot as I have also to perform as PMC chairman.

Rumours and speculations had been brewing for the past few weeks that Lo would be the top candidate to replace five-term Yong for the Stampin parliamentary seat in the coming parliamentary election which will be held at any time soon.

TheStaronline - Ranyoi, 44, has to work hard to earn a living for her six children because her husband Shinawi Bada, 46, has Parkinson’s disease.

Her eldest daughter Liza, 24, also has the disease and can only stay at home, while her other two daughters and three sons are schooling.

Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang visited her home with a group of reporters and officers yesterday and was saddened to see Shinawi and Liza wheelchair-bound and trembling because of the disease.

“My husband was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease about five years ago. It just happened all of a sudden one day. He just trembled non-stop for no reason.

“After that, he could not continue working as a gardener at the Civic Centre and had to resign due to safety concerns. Shortly after that, my daughter was diagnosed with the disease too,” lamented Jiru.

She said she was now the sole breadwinner of the family by working as a cleaner at SMK Arang Road nearby.

“Fortunately, the Welfare Department is giving our family RM400 and my husband RM150 each month,” said Jiru.

“Our eldest son is married and also has a hard life of his own with his family. He just had a newborn son,” she added.

The family previously lived in a run-down shack in Kampung Sinar Budi and were noticed by concerned villagers and the St Joseph Catholic Church.

They raised funds and built her a better house about two years ago.

Unfortunately, the house was destroyed by a fire on July 3 with the family salvaging only the clothes on their backs.

They are now staying temporarily at a relative’s house nearby.

Lo said he and Stampin MP Datuk Yong Khoon Seng had applied for government assistance for the family to rebuild their house.

“A RM40,000 fund has been approved and we hope the construction will start next week,” he said, adding that Jiru and her family could live in the house with electricity and water supply in two to three months.

Jiru said she was thankful for the contributions of not only the people but also MPP and the government.

She said she only hoped her school-going children would do well in their studies and have a good future.

Padawan Municipal Council Helps Elderly Couple To Get New House After Fire Razed Old One

KUCHING: When his house was razed a fortnight ago, Morni Bujang from Kampung Haji Baki near here feared for the worst.

Being paralysed, the 78-year-old had to put up temporarily with her granddaughter Amy Salleh and not one to burden his loved ones, he longed for a new place.

His Ramadan prayers were answered as through the swift action of Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), Morni will soon be getting a new house, complete with electricity and water supply under the Program Bantuan Rumah (PBR).

What is even more comforting is that it will be built on the site of the previous one.

MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang relayed the good news to Morni and his wife Jaleha Abdullah, 77, yesterday. Accompanying Lo was Batu Kawa PBB chairman Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim.

Lo said the new wooden house, which costs RM40,000, would be built after Aidilfitri and work was expected to be completed within four months.

Good tidings: Lo (centre) and Ahmad (at Lo’s left) with Morni (on wheelchair) and Jaleha (next to Morni) after they relayed the good news to the couple.
“When we got to know that the house was burnt down, we immediately helped the couple to apply for the PBR and we received the approval from Rural and Regional Development Ministry within two weeks.

“It shows the efficiency of the government,” said Lo.

Recalling the day of the fire, Amy said her grandparents were resting in the kitchen in the afternoon when she saw smoke billowing from the roof.

She said her grandfather had gone for a medical check-up earlier in the morning.

“Upon seeing the smoke, my family and I quickly rushed to the house and got both of them out.
“We were lucky to be able to do so as within five minutes, the house was completely burnt down by the raging fire,” said Amy, who is one of the couple’s 18 grandchildren and stays right next to Morni and Jaleha. The couple have three children.

She was thankful for the swift action from relevant authoritites in approving the PBR for her grandparents.

“We really appreciate the help from MPP,” she said, adding that her grandparents would be celebrating Hari Raya this year at her house.

KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council Chairman, Lo Khere Chiang has denied rumours that he will be replacing Dato Yong Khoon Seng as the Member of Parliament for Stampin.

He also denied rumours that Yong would not be recontesting in the coming parliamentary election.

Lo was interviewed on Sunday evening after attending the “Buy and Win Lucky Draw” contest organized by Ghee Yong Holdings (LKY) Sdn Bhd at Padawan Fair at MJC here.

“I think this is not the right time to discuss who should replace Dato Yong as the most important thing is gaining back the confidence of the voters.

“The person who will be replacing Yong must be a winnable and capable candidate who can perform well in serving the people,” he said.

“I would not say I should be given the chance to stand as there are still many young and capable leaders in the party.

“For the time being, I will work hard for my council and do the best for the people in my area,” Lo added.

He pointed out that Yong had been doing his best to serve the people well over the years and that the voters were very confident with him.

Lo Khere Chiang: MPP to make Giam waterfall safer

Lo Khere Chiang: MPP to make Giam waterfall safer

KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) will soon explore the infamous Giam waterfall to find out what could be done to make it a safer place for visitors.

Saying this to The Borneo Post yesterday, MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang said that they would also put up appropriate signs to warn the public of a particular dangerous spot.

“It is so unfortunate that lives have been lost at this particular spot and we are looking into what can be done to prevent similar incidents from happening in future,” he said.

He said this when asked to comment on the latest incident where a male doctor and a nurse drowned at the waterfall at about 11.30am on Monday.

It was further learnt that among the proposals considered by the council was to fill up the deepest portion where people were believed to have faced trouble and drowned.

In the Monday tragedy, the 27-year-old male doctor from Semariang was believed to have drowned when trying to rescue one of the nurses struggling in the water during their picnic there.

Instead of rescuing the first victim, the doctor, a heart specialist, also got into trouble and both of them never came out of the water.

The other two nurses shouted for help from the villagers nearby but they were also too late for the rescue.

When the kampung folk found the nurse, she was already lifeless and active resuscitation was unable to revive her.

The body of the second victim was recovered by the Fire and Rescue personnel when they arrived at the scene about an hour later.

This tragedy is certainly not the first to have occurred at the Giam waterfall, but despite the danger, the scenic view at the area still attracts visitors.

Annah Rais hot spring to be upgraded

Annah Rais hot spring to be upgraded

KUCHING: The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) is going to turn the Annah Rais hot spring area into a camp site through its community based eco-tourism (CBET) programme.

MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang said this was to further develop the area as a popular tourist destination since the place had gained greater popularity since the completion of the upgrading on the Annah Rais hot spring recently.

“We started the upgrading work since middle of last year and it was completed sometime last November and we have handed it back to the villagers to run,” he said at a press conference after chairing the full council meeting yesterday.

He also disclosed that with the proper facilities, the hot spring is now getting more popular where around 200 visitors go there every weekend.

Fees charged per-entry by the villagers were RM3 for adults, children (RM2) and RM1 for primary school pupils.

“All the money collected will go to the group of people who own the area,” he said.
